On November 24, I presented Don't Fix don't float at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London.

On November 23-24, I presented a paper at the symposium on Portugal and European Construction, held at Coimbra University and available (in Portuguese) by clicking on the flag . The book with the proceedings was launched on December 17, 2002.

On November 14, I presented Development Centre's Technical Paper 181 to a seminar organized by BDNET-World Business Databases at Hotel Tivoli in Lisbon.

On November 2, I presented a paper, available here, at a conference held at Harvard University's Center for European Studies, which is forthcoming in.From Isolation to Integration Spain and Portugal in the European Union after 15 Years, edited by Sebastián Royo and Paul C. Manuel, London: Frank Cass, 2003.

On October 20, I gave the closing adress at the annual conference of the Mediterranean Commission of the European League for Economic Co-operation on "The promotion of private investment of EU countries in the Mediterranean area". The topic of my address was Towards Arab and Euro-Mediterranean economic integration, from the title of a (then forthcoming) publication of the OECD Development Centre..

On September 29, I gave a talk on the euro holdup at the Atlantida Association in Brussels, drawing on my BBV presentation of February 1 and 2.

On September 28, I attended a meeting of the Foundation for European Civilisation in Brussels on European culture.

On September 24, I participated in the 11th Lisbon meetings of the Bank of Portugal and distributed copies of publication of the OECD Development Centre titled Don't Fix don't float.

On August 24, I participated in one of the Friday meetings of the Bank of Mozambique during a joint mission to Maputo with the Private Sector Development Program of the OECD Sahel Club, which was then interested in promoting an Africa-wide enterprise network. The topic was the world economy and prospects for Mozambique. On the way back from Mozambique, the mission met with the Minister for Cooperation to solicit funding for this Private Sector Development Program of the OECD Sahel Club.

On July 23, I participated in a panel on country partnerships moderated by Niels Dabelstein, DANIDA, at the 4th World Bank Conference on Evaluation and Development - the Partnership Dimension, where I gave a paper on Partnerships: the essential role of the state, to be published in Liebenthal, A., O. Feinstein, and G. K. Ingram, editors, Evaluation and Development---The Partnership Dimension. London and New Brunswick, N.J.: Transaction.. On July 22, I participated in a panel on dollarization moderated by Sebastian Edwards at the NBER Interamerican Seminar on Economics and distributed advanced copies of the forthcoming publication of the OECD Development Centre titled Don't Fix don't float.

From 16 to 20 July, I attended the Summer Institute of the National Bureau for Economic Research (NBER), in Cambridge (Massachusetts).

On 12-13 July, I attended a seminar organised by the International Labour Office on Globalisation, Employment and Poverty Reduction, in Divonne-les-Bains (France).

On 4 July , I participated in a panel of the  Committee on European Affairs of the Portuguese parliament on the future of Europe and distributed section 5 of the Vatican paper.

On 29 June, I presented a paper on Portugal's transition to the euro at the 12th annual European and Foreign Policy Conference on Greece in the New European Architecture, organised in Athens by the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy .

On 14 June, I participated in a meeting of  the World Bank Comprehensive Development Framework Evaluation steering committee, in Copenhagen .

On 8 June, I participated in a meeting of the central council of the European League for Economic Co-operation, in Prague at which I spoke on Globalisation and Governance: a Development Perspective, based on the Vatican paper.

On June 1, I attended a “Conference about the Current Problems of the European Economy” held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Fundation, organised by the Economic and Social Council, the Luso-American Development Foundation and Gulbenkian, which celebrated the 25th anniversary of the first MIT mission to Portugal,  and flew back to Paris with Paul Krugman whom I had invited to give a talk at the OECD.

On 29-30 May, I spoke on Globalisation and Governance: a Development Perspective, based on the Vatican paper, at a seminar of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE)'s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, in Warsaw.

On 26 May, I participated in the Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank in Valencia, where I presented some of the Centre's work on Africa,

On 25 May, I participated in a meeting on the teaching of economics held at the University of Evora, where I used my introductory course on macroeconomics as a case study, with abondant reference to its last edition in Spring 1999.

On 18 May, I presented  a seminar on Globalisation and Governance: a Development Perspective, based on the Vatican paper,  at the School of Mining, in Paris organised by the French Finance ministry.

On 16 May, I chaired the session on Globalisation and Governance at the OECD Forum 2001 on Sustainable Development and the New Economy, in Paris.

On 8 May, I participated in a meeting of the Euro 50 Group, in Berlin.

On 7 May, I commented on the paper by Antoni and Bartolomiej Kaminski at  the spring seminar of European Union/United Nations in Geneva on Creating a Supportive Environment for Business Enterprise and Economic Growth: Institutional Reform and Governance.The comment appears in the Economic Survey of Europe, 2001 nº 2, Geneva: UN Economic Comission for Europe,  pp. 145-147.

On 4 May, I opened the seminar on E-Commerce for Development: Reviewing Early Experiences, Comparing New Ideas at the University of Bologna.

On April 25-28 I attended the 7th plenary session of the Pontifical Academy for Social Sciences in the Vatican.

On April 19, I gave the inaugural lecture of the Economics and Management program at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana de Castelo, titled A European perspective on international financial architecture, based on OECD Development Centre Technical Paper nº 162. On 30 March, I  addressed an international conference on The "New Economy" and its
Implications for Long-Term Growth in Post-Socialist Countries in Warsaw. The paper is available here.

On 9-12 March I attended the plenary meetings of The Trilateral Commission in London.

On 2 March I made a presentation titled "Economic consequences of migration: a development perspective" at a conference on Crossing National Borders: Connecting People to Economies organised by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington.

On February 20, as a member of the working party on systemic issues of the UN event Financing for Development I commented on chapter VI of the UN Secretary-General´s report  during the Preparatory Committee. The working party had met at the NY headquarters on 9 October, where I had distributed OECD Development Centre Technical Paper nº 162.The statement to the PrepCom can be found here.

On 8 February, I spoke on "Globalisation and Governance" at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, as part of an "Initiative for Policy Dialogue," directed by Joseph Stiglitz and Ann Florini.

On February 1 and 2, I participated in a meeting of BBVA Midas in Porto and Lisbon. My  presentation  is available by clicking on the title Is Portugal a victim of the "euro holdup"?

On January 31, I commented on a presentation by Francesco Giavazzi on The economics of the euro at the CEPR executive committee meeting  hosted by Deutsche Bank in London and drew on ideas of the forthcoming publication of the OECD Development Centre titled Don't Fix don't float.

On  January 26, I presented Converging European Transitions  (which appeared as OECD Development Centre Technical Paper nº 159 and was published in a special issue of The World Economy) at the Faculty of Applied Economics of the University of Antwerp during a conference on the enlargement of the European Union titled An Expanding Europe?

On 16 January, I participated in a  meeting of the steering committee of  the  Comprehensive Development Framework Evaluation. The meeting took place at the Paris office of the World Bank and was a follow-up to one at the Bank's Washington headquarters, on 19 October 2000.

On January 13, I commented on a paper by Anne Krueger on Korean chaebol capitalism at a NBER Conference on Currency Crises Prevention  in the Florida Keys. It is available here.
