On 11 December, I chaired a debate on "Venture Capital: the EU versus the US" in Brussels as
part of the Euro 50 Group’s discussions.

On 8 December, I participated in a meeting of the informal working group of the DAC on "Long-Term Prospects for the Great Lakes Region."

On 24 November, I participated with Daniel Gros, Robert Boyer and others in a  panel on Is the Euro viable? held at DELTA, drawing on the EACES paper available here

On 10 November, I attended the European meetings of The Trilateral Commission in Milan.

On 6 November, I gave the inaugural lecture of the Economics program at the University of Aveiro, titled A European perspective on international financial architecture, based on OECD Development Centre Technical Paper nº 162.

On 26 October, I described the OECD Development Centre’s work on corruption and governance at an international conference on corruption at the French Senate in Paris organised by the Crans-Montana Forum and the World Bank.

On 19 October, I presented a paper at a workshop organised by the World Bank’s Research and Operations Evaluation Departments to evaluate the "Comprehensive Development
Framework", with  a series of follow up meetings.

On 13 October, I opened the joint workshop with the Institute for Advanced International Studies in Geneva on new forms of co-operation in emerging Africa.

On 12 October, I participated in a seminar at the French National Assembly on "African  perspectives."

On 9 October, I took part in the working group on systemeic issues in preparation for the United Nations conference on Financing for Development, which took place in March 2002 in Monterrey.

On 22 September,  I presented the Development Centre publication on corruption in developing countries at the Anti-Corruption Summit 2000, in Arlington, VA.

On 20 September,  I presented a paper on  Convergence, democracy and cohesion: Is there a European identity in development? at a seminar on aid effectiveness held at CERDI, Clermont Ferrand. A French version of this paper appeared in Rapport Moral sur l´Argent dans le Monde.

On 15 September,  I presented a paper on Risk Management and Financial Globalisation (with José Braz), available here at the Eurofin2000 in Paris.

On 14 September,  I presented a joint paper with Barry Eichengreen, The European Payments Union and its Implications for the Evolution of the International Financial Architecture at the International Triffin Foundation  seminar held in Louvain at the Catholic University. The paper was subsequently published  in Fragility of the International Financial System – How can we prevent new crises in emerging markets?, edited by Alexandre Lamfalussy, Bernard Snoy and Jérôme Wilson, Brussels: PIE Peter Lang, 2001, pp. 25-42.

On September 11, I hosted a luncheon of Forum Portugal Global in honor of Pierre Moussa, with the purpose of planning a Europe/Africa meeting in Morocco, which has not materialized.

On September 9, I presented a keynote address on the Euro and international financial architecture at the European Association for Comparative Economic Studies  (EACES) 6th Conference held in Barcelona. A preliminary version is available here.

From 22 to 28 August, I attended the Summer Camp at Universidad Torcuato di Tella, presented
OECD Development Centre Technical Paper #162 at a panel on the future of Mercosul held at the Central Bank of Argentina and pursued the Development Centre´s work on corruption. Note from Clarin from interview with Pablo Kandel reproduced here. Supertango moment here.

On 3-6 August, I participated in the Washington Workshop on East Timor and presented a paper (with José Braz and Rui Sousa Monteiro) titled National development and economic transition under international governance: the case of East Timor. The overall results of the workshop are available here.

From 13 to 27 July, I visited the World Bank, the United Nations and the NBER Summer Institute in Washington, New York and Cambridge, respectively. I also attended a brainstorming on Democratic Governance at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace organised by Joseph Stiglitz and Ann Florini.

On 27 June, I commented on a paper by Federico Borezstein, IMF,  at the 6th Dubrovnik Economic Conference.

On 26 June, I organized a session on “What Exchange Rate Regime for Developing
Countries?” at the second Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics-Europe, which subsequently became a publication of the OECD Development Centre titled Don't Fix don't float.

On 16 June I made a presentation on Europe at the European Affairs Committee of the Portuguese parliament.

On 10 June, I attended the 1st Bank of Portugal Conference on Monetary Economics, held in Guimarães

On 31 May, I presented From the real to the euro, via the escudo at ISEG in Lisbon, featuring  Álvaro Ferreira da Silva and Rita Martins de Sousa, my co-authors in the paper War, Taxes and Gold: the inheritance of the real.

On 22 May, I attended a meeting of the “Euro Group” in Turin, on “Improving the Integration of
Financial Markets in Europe”.

On 18 May,  I presented From the real to the euro, via the escudo at  a conference on Atlantic Portugal sponsored by the Portuguese Cultural Center in Paris. The text is available here.

On 15 May I spoke about the consequences of globalisation for corporate governance at Universidade Lusíada, Lisbon to open  a  seminar on M&A organized by 3(HO). The powerpoint presentation  is available (in Portuguese) by clicking on the flag .

On 13 May, I gave a lecture on globalization at the University of Beira Interior in Covilhã.

On 12 May, I gave a lecture on international financial markets at the Instituto de Estudos Superiores Financeiros e Fiscais in Porto. The outline is available (in Portuguese) by clicking on the flag .

On 4 May, I participated in a seminar on multilateral surveillance organised by the Portuguese EU presidency at the Ministry of Finance.

From 28 April to 23 June I gave a series of five lectures in a special graduate course in Financial Markets, Institutions and Instruments offered by Nova Forum in cooperation with the Porto Derivatives Exchange titled Financial globalization and the euro.

On 14 April, I participated in the 31st Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR)  Economic Policy Panel hosted by the Bank of Portugal and on 15-16 April I appeared on the panel on "The Portuguese economy in a European Context", Lisbon.

On 8-10 April, I attended the plenary meetings of The Trilateral Commission in Tokyo.

On 1 April, I attended a EU enlargement meeting in Brussels.

On March 26, I visited the President of Mexico and discussed plans for the OECD Development Centre.

On 24 March, I attended the NBER program meeting in Cambridge, Mass

On 11 February, I participated in a seminar on the European enlargement  organized by ICEP (Investments, Commerce & Tourism of Portugal) in Lisbon.

On 4-6 February, I attended the Reiventing Bretton Woods conference on "What is to be done? Global economic disorder and policies for a new Financial Architecture in a new millennium", held at the University of Amsterdam and made a presentation based on OECD Development Centre Technical Paper #162  at the plenary panel on The future of the Imnternational Monetary Fund in international cooperation and crisis management: return to original mission or new departure?.
