My fields are international finance and macroeconomics, where I research, teach and operate. Most of my research is published in the NBER or in the CEPR series. I chair the Portuguese group of the Trilateral Commission, among other public service activities.

With an interdisciplinary background, I joined Nova's faculty in 1976, before spending several years at Yale and at Princeton. In 1984 I returned as visiting associate professor and was offered a joint appointment with the Institute for Tropical Research.

I went to the European Commission in 1988 to monitor macroeconomic policies in member states and in the former soviet bloc. In 1991 I was elected member of the Portuguese parliament. I served as Minister of Finance for 2 years and as President of the European Affairs Committee for the remainder of the term.
